Kondh tribal people are of Dravidian origin and the word means "hill" though the Desi or Desia Kondh live on the plains. The groups of Kondh are actually territorial divisions such as Dongria, Kutia, Penga, Jhuria and Desi. The Kondh prefer adult marriage and acquire spouses by mutual consent with bride price or by capture. Mostly monogamous, residence is patrilocal, divorce is allowed for both sexes but males inherit and succession follows the male line. Lac bangles and toe rings are symbols
of a married woman. They observe a number of rituals in connection with birth, puberty, marriage and death.
