Gond

Spread over seven contiguous states, the Gonds are the largest tribe in India. The Raj Gonds are the aristocrats and consider other groups of Gond as lower in rank. They are the teachers, land owners doctors, business men etc. with others, mainly agriculturalists, working the fields. There have been militant struggles (Naxalite Maoists) over land rights for many years as large numbers of outsiders have increased and displaced the poor. Most of the Gonds in Madhya Pradesh are Hindu though traditional tribal religion with "Baradeo" as the supreme diety is followed with clan priests and diviners performing puja sacrifices to the several gods and goddesses. The Gond have a rich tradition of arts and crafts including body tattooing, floor and wall painting, pottery, lost wax brass casting, music and dance.
