The Kondh are of Dravidian origin. Animists, they formerly sacrificed humans to the Earth Goddess Tari-Pena but the British stopped this custom as well as female infanticide. Disputes are settled by divination (including trance), oath taking and trial by ordeal and women, as well as men, can be priests. Physically deformed or diseased people don't marry but (in order to enter the home of the ancestor spirits at death) they become spiritually married to a mango tree.
